Prevalence of drug useAccording to the last study displayed by the Ministry of Health on the drug use, the number of teenagers, ages 14 to 18, who consume or have consumed cocaine in our country has multiplied by four in the last 10 years. At the moment, cocaine is the second most frequently used drug among Spanish young people, only after cannabis.
This data was corroborated in the last study carried out by the National Plan on Drugs, which shows that drug use has significantly increased in Spain in the last ten years, especially among young people, ages between 14 and 18, who mainly use cocaine for recreational purposes. Also, as we can see in the following graphics, cocaine use among 18-year-old teens has greatly increased in the last year.
The bullish tendency of consumption among young people extends to the demographic group aged between 15 and 64 years, as the Household Survey done by the Spanish Observatory on Drugs shows:
With all this data, we must consider another really significant key for us: the number of consumers who decide to treat their addiction has considerably increased in the last years.
This map of the prevalence of drug use leads us to a health and social problem of first-order in our country, especially among the youngest population. However, drug use among young people is a tremendous and tragic problem worldwide. The following graph represents a summary of the past and present decade's tendencies towards drug use by adolescents in the USA.
Current approaches to this problem include international, military and police efforts to control the production and to interdict the flow of addictive drugs, as well as a diverse array of programs involving education and role models that are designed to deter youngsters from using drugs. For that reason, it is necessary to promote and reinforce drugs prevention programs, on the part of public and private institutions, to tackle the tremendous increase of users, not just among teenagers, but a growing number of younger people.
