» SUMMARY REPORT I: The present work is an assessment of the effectiveness of the UROD treatment, the ultra-rapid opiate detoxification, consisting of hastening the suppression with naltrexone under deep sedation in association with subsequent rehabilitation, used in polydrug abusers addicted to opiates, mainly heroin and methadone. The different approaches that inspire the pharmacological treatments of opiate dependence and the role of detoxification versus the maintenance treatments with opiate agonists are presented, indicating the significance of neuroadaptation in the treatment of addiction. The study reviews the development of the ultra-rapid detoxification procedures and points out their aims and limitations. Results are shown for a sample of 962 cases treated with the UROD method by TAVAD and followed up for 9 months. During the follow up period, the patients could have several treatment possibilities: supervised psychotherapy by TAVAD for 1 or 9 months; or other psychotherapy standards not provided by TAVAD; this was always associated with the pharmacological support of naltrexone for nine months. A 100% detoxification retention was achieved, and a 99.9% access to supportive treatment. After 9 months, there was a 58.1% success rate in the patients that completed the detoxification and began the psychopharmacological rehabilitation treatment currently being used by TAVAD; this proportion increases up to 90% in relation to the amount of time one stays in rehabilitation. |
» SUMARY REPORT II: This Agency preferred, and the applicant company (TAVAD) was agreed, that both documents, Description and Discussion, were separately displayed because of their size and the nature of the information contained. The Descriptive Report is the result of researching in TAVAD databases and reporting the significant information. Therefore, there is not a bibliography in order to show only the numbers and permit the interested reader to analyze them by his own criterion. Numbers analyzed in the previous report are discussed in this new document. In order to make reading easy and understandable by itself, without having to read both documents at the same time, the most important outcome tables have been included to help the reader. In any case, both documents are parts of the same report and both are needed in order to make an exhaustive analysis.
